A Journey of Resilience: Twila's Path to Stability and Hope
Charlotte Ward: A Woman Called Twila
Miss Twila’s journey through homelessness began 30 years ago, shaped by struggles with substance abuse. But to truly understand her story, we must first explore the vibrant life she lived before homelessness took over.
A Life Rooted in Passion
Born in Los Angeles, CA, Twila spent her most creative years immersed in the heart of the city and its surrounding areas. Her love for animals—especially horses—led her to a fulfilling job at Fresno State, where she cared for these magnificent creatures. To this day, her passion for animals remains her greatest source of joy.
Anyone who has taken a car ride with Twila knows how her face lights up at the sight of horses. With childlike excitement, she often exclaims, “Can we just stop and pet them, please?”
A Life-Changing Connection
While her journey through chronic homelessness was long and difficult, no relationship shaped her transformation quite like the bond she formed with her Case Manager, Chevelle Parks. Their first meeting on December 12, 2023, marked the beginning of a life-changing partnership.
Chevelle committed herself fully to helping Twila navigate the immense challenges of life on the streets. Over the following months, she and the team walked alongside Twila, relentlessly advocating for her well-being.
Nothing could shake Chevelle’s determination. When necessary, she would track Twila down to ensure she attended critical doctor appointments. The mental health team played a crucial role, offering unwavering support that made all the difference in Twila’s progress.
The Road to Stability
Despite many setbacks, the team never gave up. They helped Twila stay in the shelter long enough to establish a health plan and develop a housing strategy.
Then, on October 14, 2024, came the incredible news—Twila was finally getting her own apartment!
At first, she was scared. She worried that her case managers were simply trying to move her out, that she was being displaced once again. But the Housing Stability Case Managers reassured her—this wasn’t the end of their support. Even after leaving the shelter, she would have ongoing guidance and care.
Just ten days later, on October 24, 2024, Miss Twila held the keys to her first apartment. It was a powerful moment of triumph, a testament to the resilience she had built over decades of hardship.
A Message of Faith and Perseverance
When asked what advice she would give to others still waiting for housing, Twila’s response was simple yet profound:
“If I can do it, they can do it! I was blessed to have gone through a storm and made it this far! I believe God has a purpose for my life!”
Her words remind us that no journey is without purpose. We are all part of something greater, and through faith, perseverance, and community support, lives can be transformed.
Miss Twila’s story is one of hope, resilience, and redemption—and we are honored to continue walking alongside her as she embraces this new chapter.
